For smaller groups, we offer exclusive minibus trips. Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of the region's foremost tourist destinations. The mountainous region of the northern shore is known both for its historic character and as a major wine region, while the flat southern shore is known for its resort towns. The lake's surface freezes during winters. The microclimate around Lake Balaton has also made the region ideal for viticulture. The Mediterranean-like climate, combined with the soil (containing volcanic rock), has made the region notable for its production of wines since the Roman period two thousand years ago. The major resorts around the lake are Siófok, Keszthely, and Balatonfüred. Zamárdi, another resort town on the southern shore, has been the site of Balaton Sound, a notable electronic music festival since 2007. Siófok is known for attracting young people to it because of its large clubs. Keszthely is the site of the Festetics Palace and Balatonfüred is a historical bathing town. The peak tourist season extends from June until the end of August. The average water temperature during the summer is 25 °C (77 °F), which makes bathing and swimming popular on the lake. Most of the beaches consist of either grass, rocks, or the silty sand that also makes up most of the bottom of the lake. Many resorts have artificial sandy beaches and all beaches have step access to the water. Other tourist attractions include sailing, fishing, and other water sports, as well as visiting the countryside and hills, wineries on the north coast, and nightlife on the south shore. The Tihany Peninsula is a historical district. Badacsony is a volcanic mountain and wine-growing region as well as a lakeside resort. The lake is almost completely surrounded by separated bike lanes to facilitate bicycle tourism. Although the peak season at the lake is the summer, Balaton is also frequented during the winter, when visitors go ice-fishing or even skate, sledge, or ice-sail on the lake if it freezes over.

Siófok - the capital city

Siófok the charming little town is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Hungary. The population is around 25,000 people but in the summer season there is always another 200,000 people spending their vacation there at the same time. Siófok is often referred to as the capital of the Lake Balaton. It is mostly famous for its huge nightlife and the never ending parties. The town is often called "the partying capital of Hungary". But it is important to know that outside the town centre, there are many quiet and peaceful beaches and strands for every age group. Balaton, being a shallow lake, is warmed up by the Sun very quickly. At the end of July or in August, the water temperature can be as high as 24-26 degrees Celsius (75-79 degrees Fahrenheit) During the 20th century, the lake and Siófok was a popular destination for German tourists nowadays, about half of the tourists come from other Hungarian regions, and the other half from foreign countries. Main sights: Water tower, Jókai park - With a beautiful Japanese garden and English garden. Rose garden - Probably one of the most romantic places in Siófok right next to the pier. Statue park, Galerius Thermal Spa and Wellness Centre - Guests enjoy bathing and relaxing in the warm (33-37°C) geothermal water that comes up from 1091 m deep, known for its positive effects on the skin and the bones. Balatonfüred - mineral springs

Balatonfüred is a small town with a population of 13.500. The tourism of the town has started to develop for centuries, and it had been declared a spa in the first half of the 18th century, then it was immediately put in the limelight. Balatonfüred has been the first spa of Hungary since 1971 and it also became the 'International Town of Grapes and Wine'. Its fame mainly originates from its mediterranean-like climate and mineral springs. Today the water of the mineral springs is used by the State Hospital for Heart Diseases for therapeutic purposes. There are numerous famous villas and mansions in the town, whose owners contributed a lot to the image of Balatonfüred with their presence and brought the town international fame. Among the architectural masterpieces of the 18th centuries you can find the Nagyvendéglő (Big Inn) which is called Hotel Anna Grand today, the State Hospital for Heart Diseases, the pump house built on the Kossuth Lajos spring, and the mansion of Széchenyi Ferenc, which all determine the atmosphere of the town even today. The town has numerous monuments, historical buildings and traditions: in 1825 the first Anna-ball was organized in the Horváth house. .

Tihany - the history

Tihany is a jewel of not only Lake Balaton but also of Hungary. Its main assets are the historical and cultural relics related to the monasetry, the unique landscape and the recreational possibilities of Lake Balaton. Lake Balaton was formed by tectonic sagging around 25.000 years ago. Tihanyi-félsziget (Tihany peninsula) divides the lake into two basins. The characteristic view of the Mediterranean lanscape was formed by volcanic europtions millions of year ago as shown today by two giant calderas. The remains of these craters form two little lakes, without outlet, higher than the water level of Lake Balaton: Belso-tó, which is popular with anglers, and Külso-tó, a paradise for aquatic birds. Beside geological features, the peninsula is famous for its exeptional wildlife: the area became the first nature reserve of Hungary. The ancient village of Tihany was founded in the Middle Ages when King Andrew I. founded a burial-place here for the royal family in 1055 and built a monastery, where Benedictine monks were settled. During the Turkish times, in the 16-17th century, the monasetry, which has been transformed into a fortress, was demolished. It was rebuilt in baroque style in the 18th century and became a symbol of Tihany. A few years ago, the Benedictine monks were again put in charge of the monastery and the Abbey Museum.

Badacsony - and the wine

Badacsony is one of the most beautiful Hungarian mountains... Its characteristic shape has a symbolic significance, representing at the same time the Balaton, we think of the two together. It was on this almost sacred mountain that the largest basalt stone quarry in Hungary functioned. Its landscape aesthetic value and its significance for nature preservation was acknowledge when in 1954 the quarrying works stopped and it was declared a landscape preservation district. This is how a beauty world renowned, the basalt cones rising from the plane in the Tapolca Basin were formed. They are called Witness Mountains. The Badacsony wine region was named after the Badacsony, which "witnesses" the reunion of man and nature through over two thousand years of wine culture. The vineyards on the side of the Badacsony, which dips into the Balaton like a peninsula, ripen their grape bunches in the sub- Mediterranean type of microclimate.

Szigliget - 750 years history

The village can be found on the northern bank of Lake Balaton in the vicinity of Badacsony and Keszthely. The village was built between and on volcanic hills. The settlement existed in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Celtic, Roman and Avar archaeological finds were discovered in the vicinity. Until 1822 the area was an island in Lake Balaton. The island was connected to the mainland in 1822 by rearrangement of the bank-dams around Balaton. The ruins of the medieval fortress stand atop the 239m Várhegy hill. Recently restored, the castle looks out on a panorama of Lake Balaton toward the Tapolca Basin. One of the most popular and rightly acclaimed castle of Hungary, Castle of Szigliget located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton can run back over 750 years history. Castle of Szigliget is bordered by Lake Balaton in the south and by Tapolca turf field and mountains in the north. Wherever we approach Szigliget the old castle unfolds from all direction. Castle of Szigliget is one of our few castles that never bore the Ottoman ensign on its towers in the Turkish times. Manful soldiers maintained their independence for 150 years, only the Habsburg-hate destroyed it, blowing up his walls.

Keszthely - történelem

The city of Keszthely is located in the south western end of Lake Balaton. The city is surrounded by forests and rolling hills to the north, plains to the south east and the lake. South from the city lies Kis-Balaton (Little Balaton), a swamp which is a part of the Zalariver delta and which acts as a natural water purifier for Lake Balaton. The swamp is particularly known as a water fowl habitat and enjoys international recognition and protection as a natural reserve. As such the town is endowed with a wide range of architectural gems displaying Gothic, baroque, Transylvanian and eclectic styles. The town is compact and may be easily explored on foot. The Festetics Palace, now the Helikon Castle Museum, must rank as the town’s major attraction. It’s construction was started at the beginning of the 18th century. The Festetics were one of the richest aristocratic families in Hungary and had a considerable influence on the development and culture of Keszthely and the surrounding areas. Family members founded pharmacies, hospitals, Grammar schools and in 1779 Count Gyorgy Festetics founded “The Georgikon”, which was Europe’s first Independent Institution of agricultural higher education.
